Mayo's brunch #4

Sunday's are all about brunch due to late night outs on Saturday. Woke up dazed & confused but wanted some quick hassle free food. Fast. I chose the main staple to be what else but instant noodles. Balancing the timing carefully, I cooked some eggs at the same time while toasting some bacon strips and cooking some bacon rolls wrapped around some chopped melted mozzarella cheese bits. Finished cooking everything in 30 mins tops.

Here is a quick snap of my quick meal! Nice?

Here is my creation of bacon rolls with melted mozzarella cheese in between. The combination of the salty bacon with the sweetness from the cheese is heavenly.

Meet my 2 furry friends who visited my dish. : )

Botak Jones

While we were awaiting for our late night movie at 2.20am, we had supper at the little food place at Youth Park located just diagonally opposite Orchard Cineleisure. Botak Jones had just opened a new stall/outlet there & we wanted to see what the fuss about their claim of having the 'biggest/tallest' burger was all about. I ordered the Double beef patty burger while my friends ordered the sausage set that came served with 2 side dishes of their choice.

Humongous sausage set meal that was ample for 2 'small' eaters. The 2 side dishes was generous in portion. Here my friend chose the coleslaw & pasta salad which was quite tasty. Value for money I guess.

Here is my order of the double beef patty cheeseburger. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with it. Yes it was stacked up tall & all but the beef patty was surprisingly quite small. The few rings of onions were loosely placed & scattered with no other vegetables or condiments within the burger. The taste test was sadly disappointing as well. The melted cheese & beef patties turned cold within a few minutes upon serving, was difficult to bite into due to it's 'thick' patties & was a bit tasteless. Couldn't taste the flame broiled/BBQ-ed flavor. Definitely needs more marinate. Overall was a meal to fill the tummy but not value for money. :(

Toa Payoh Lorong 5 Hawker Centre

Drove over to Toa Payoh Lorong 5 where they have an open concept hawker food centre that serves very delicious & generous portions of food at decent prices. We decided to order the chicken cutlet & fish fillet with mushroom rice with special belachan chilli (warning: the belachan chilli is very spicy!). To top it off, we couldn't resist ordering some barbeque chicken wings to add more sin to the already 'guilty' meal. Recommended to wash everything down with a cup of ice cold freshly squeezed sugar cane drink.

Chicken cutlet with mushroom rice served with tangy coleslaw & extremely spicy homemade belachan chilli sauce.

Look at these glistening BBQ chicken wings. Can you say No? :p

Fish fillet that looks a tad dry but it's actually very moist & flavorsome. Not your usual run of the mill 'frozen' fish fillets.

Mayo's black & white carrot cake

Mr K & I wanted to snack on some carrot cake but he wanted the 'black' sweetened version while I wanted the 'white' version retaining it's natural flavor. Hence to please both our taste buds, I whipped up both versions. Problem solved.

Black VS White

Penang style dark soya XO sauce carrot cake with beansprouts.

White crispy carrot cake with eggs.

Must be pan/stir fried till crispy and served hot with chilli!

Mayo's dinner #4

Mr K challenged me if I was able to create several dishes out of the same basic ingredients that he chose for dinner. I duly accepted the challenge laid before me. Here's what he bought:
Minced pork meat, long beans & fishcake tofu.

I bought a Cute rabbit bowl that I simply adore.

For my first dish, I cooked one of his favourite dark soya sauce minced pork with chopped spring onions.

For the second dish, I created a small side vegetable dish with stir fried long beans, coarsely chopped dried shrimps with garlic bits.

For my third dish, I whipped up a tasty diced long beans with onions & eggs.

For my fourth dish, I diced & pan fried the sides of the fish cake tofu & served it with sliced yellow capsicum covered in homemade sweet & sour sauce.

With all the dishes, I also created a simple Bento that can be consumed the next day for either breakfast, lunch or dinner! : )

The left over rice can be utilized in another way for the next day's morning breakfast. Overnight rice tends to be a little drier & easy to manipulate into most shapes. I simply stuffed the dark soya sauced minced pork into the rice and rolled it into a huge rice dumpling with flattened ends. Carefully scorch the surface of the rice dumpling with light soya sauce in a hot pan till nice & brown (toasted). Top it off with the left over minced pork, throw some toasted sesame seeds & some spring onions.

I won the challenge. :p

Ya Hua Bah Kut Teh

With the weather on the chilly side, I was craving for something yummy, hot & soupy. Headed down to old Havelock Road 'Ah Hua/Ya Hua' Teochew style Bak Kut Teh (Pork Ribs Soup with Chinese Tea) at 2am. Ironically this dish was intended to be an early morning breakfast by tradition but here in Singapore, the locals have made this delicacy their late night guilty indulgence.

Standard wet towels, chopped red chilli soaked in dark soy sauce etc.

Here's the feast! Steamed peanuts, deep fried dough fritters (You tiao), salted vegetables, 2 bowls of semi clear 'white' pork rib broth & hot white fluffy rice. They have other side dishes that we did not order like fishcakes, braised pork trotters/knuckles etc.

Here's a close up of the Bak Kut Teh. Hot, spicy & peppery in taste, huge tender chunky boiled pork ribs & soft moist shallots that melts in your mouth.
*Tip: You can even ask for numerous refills of their delicious broth for free.

Nothing like a ice cold Luo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii) drink to cool you down after a hot meal.

Verdict:
3.5/5

Mayo's favourite (ovo) sorry sorry mv

Introducing Korean group 'Super Junior'! This is their latest album launched in late March 09. This track titled 'Sorry Sorry' has a super catchy tune to it & matched with ultra slick dance moves choreographed by renowned American dance maestro Nick Bass that has conceptualised dance sets for Chris Brown, Beyonce etc. Forget about wonder girls "Nobody' & SNSD's 'Gee', this will be the next dance moves the music buffs will be dancing to.

In Korea, there is a certain genre of music known as 'Trot'. It is a hugely popular variation enjoyed by the elder generation. Mix super cool 'Sorry Sorry' with 'Trot' & you get a whole new sensation. :p

Mayo's Thai Noodles

Got home late again due to work but I was too tired to prepare a full meal. Ransacked my kitchen cabinets & decided on yummy Thai noodles in creamy Tom Yum soup. Made a soft boiled egg on the side coupled with ripe juicy tomatoes to add a dash of sweetness to the spicy soup with 3 squid balls to munch on.
